Memberships
Residents are given candidate fellowship membership in the American Academy of Pediatrics. This includes
print and online access to Pediatrics, Pediatrics in Review (PREP) and Red Book.
Access to PediaLink is also included.
Pagers
Alpha/numeric pagers are provided.
Resident Lounge
The resident lounge is located across from the main department office and adjoins the call room area.
The department provides snacks, sandwiches and soft drinks. A full size refrigerator and microwave
are available for use, as well as, computer access with personal e-mail accounts and Medline search capabilities.
On-Call Meal Tickets
Meal tickets are provided to the residents for use during overnight call.
Leave
Three weeks of vacation are granted each year. Vacation may be carried over to the next academic year.
A holiday schedule between Christmas and the New Year allows for residents to have 6 additional days off.
Maternity/paternity leave is available using medical leave and personal vacation.
Fitness Center
Residents will have access to the Norman C. Nelson Student Center, which includes a weight room, indoor track and gym.
PALS/NALS
Residents will receive certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support and Neonatal Life
Support at the beginning of their residency. During the spring of their PL-2 year, the
APLS (Advanced Pediatric Life Support) Course is offered. This includes renewal of PALS
certification. Advanced Trauma Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support are available
to PL-2 residents, as well.
Lab Coats
Interns receive 3 lab coats from the Medical Center.
Educational Funds
The Pediatric Department reserves funds for the residents to use for the purchase of educational items. During the PL-3 year,
Peds Study will be purchased from these funds.
Board Certification Preparation
The American Board of Pediatrics in training exam is given each year. Twice weekly noon conferences cover the entire Nelson’s textbook over a 12 month period and resident-only board review sessions are held weekly.
