Welcome from the Chairman

Pediatric residency training at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson is structured so that the graduate is fully experienced in caring for sick and injured children of all ages.

All residency training occurs at the Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children, the state's only children's hospital located on the health sciences campus. It is both a primary care and a tertiary care facility where residents see a melding of both rare and common diseases. The Batson Hospital for Children includes general and subspecialty ambulatory clinics the state's only pediatric emergency room, pediatric intensive care unit, inpatient services, children's rehabilitation service, and a child psychiatry unit. The adjoining Winfred Wiser Hospital for Women & Infants houses the only Level III neonatal intensive care unit in the state as well as a newborn nursery with more than 3,200 births annually. There is a modern pediatric surgical center for both inpatient and ambulatory surgery and endoscopy suites with supporting services. The dedication and grand opening of the new Eli Manning Pediatric Ambulatory Clinic was held in June of this year and by the spring of 2011 the new pediatric emergency department will be completed.

Providing a complete educational experience, our residency training program is oriented toward general pediatrics. Emphasis is placed on ambulatory and emergency experiences as well as general pediatric inpatient experiences. With sixteen divisions in the Department, there is ample exposure to subspecialty pediatrics.

We are delighted that you have expressed an interest in our residency training program, and will be happy to assist you in making plans to visit.
